有學生說，近來到美國出差，聽到老美抱怨：It's a slow day.他一開始還以為是什麼慢了，難道是交通很差嗎？回來一查才知道他的意思是「業績清淡」。

slow是一個簡單的字，但如果只會把它理解成「慢」，會錯失很多傳神的表達方式。來看幾個例子：

slow有「需要花很長時間」，因此有「困難」的意思，如：

He is slow of understanding. （他理解力較差。）

He is so slow that I have to explain everything several times. （他太遲鈍，我得解釋好幾遍。）

He is slow at speech with the boss yet.（他跟老闆說話時還是有點笨嘴拙舌。）

Slow and steady wins the race.是「慢而穩者勝」。其實這裡slow並非指「慢」，而是強調「不慌張」、「沈著」，譯為「沈著穩健者勝」更好。

有slow day就有slow season，淡季，淡季的相反是high season旺季，還有peak season是業績高峰。

另外，相對於把鐘點撥快的夏令時間(daylight saving time)而言的標準時間是slow time，拳擊中一開始採取守勢而後猛攻的選手叫a slow starter，這本書很乏味用The book is rather slow。

go slow中的slow是副詞，除了表示「慢慢地走」，還可表示「不慌」、「小心」、「怠工」、「偷懶」等意思，例如：

You'd better go slow in reaching a conclusion.（你別急於下結論。）

Be slow to promise but quick to practice.（承諾可慢，實踐要快。）

反過來，雖然多數情況下「慢」可譯為slow(ly)，但也有例外，如「慢性病」是chronic disease。

還有一個很有視覺畫面的片語叫slow burn，意思是漸漸發火：

We could see the boss doing a slow burn as he heard one lame excuse after another.（我們看見老闆臉上越來越難看，因為他聽到我們一個比一個更扯的藉口。）
